I know it’s been a while since I posted a new tutorial on GDN, but one should be coming in the near future. One of the pieces of Horse Crazy turned out to be “generic” enough to be useful over and over again so I thought I’d write it up and share the code.
Dwayne sent me a bunch of finished artwork today so I’ve been busy clipping it out, resizing, and getting things into the app. I’d hoped to have a video walk-through by this point, but things are in a “non working state” so that will have to wait.
Are We On Schedule?
You know, that’s a hard question to answer. At this point I firmly believe we’ll have a good first version to upload by next Friday, but I also know how software development can go sometimes.
Which is why we already moved to Plan B.
And I have a Plan C and Plan D just in case. 🙂
The current version of the app won’t have the contest, so you won’t be able to enter your horse in the horse show after you’ve duded them all up. That will go in one of the first updates.
Plan C has us cutting out the Tack Store so you’ll only have the initial amount of tack to dress with which to dress up your horse.
And if we have to go with Plan D we won’t include the “Share Your Horse” option in the initial version. Which will be sad because that’s the one that can really attract more users to the app. If we have to go all the way back to Plan D we’ll cut the price of the app to .99 until we get the other features in place.
I think chances of hitting Plan B are about 80%, so that’s what I’m planning for. But you never know what tomorrow is going to bring… 🙂
Kids Are Gone
I love my kids, but I also love that they will be gone to camp next week. 🙂 That means I’ll have the office (living room) to myself and should be able to focus just on work.
As soon as I have something I can flip through to show, I’ll upload a video so you can see I’m not just faking the whole thing. 🙂
I’m digging the art work. Has a good feel to it.
It’s funny you mention Plan A, B, C, D. At this point my app could be released, it’s got one level, but *most* of the features I want to implement have been accomplished.
I have 73 days left until submission so I’m hoping to be at least to plan B by then (using A as the “Everything I wanted” option and D as the “Bare Bones Option”
In terms of price point, I have found that in retail it’s always easier to start high and go lower rather than start low and try to go high.
I’ll most likely be in the .99 range, but it depends on feedback.
Good luck, I’ll check back in a day or 2 and see how you are doing 🙂

Nick,
Just to note, I have read several accounts of people publishing their apps at a higher price then dropping it, only to be bombarded with bad reviews because of that. Buyers get angry when they purchase and then the price drops. Just some food for thought.
I look forward to some new Tutorials! By the way I just found your blog which you said in a way earlier post that you would also post a tutorial about your fist game? Is that still in the works as well? I would love to see a tutorial on that too.
Thanks
Derek
